HISTORY OF PAD PRINTING
Pad Printing History
History of Pad Printing
In very simple forms, Pad Printing dates back hundreds of years. That being said it wasn’t until the 1960’s and 70’s where the industry began to gain real traction. Post World War II saw the increased use of pad printing on items with irregular surfaces such as watch faces. In the 1960’s and 70’s came the progression of equipment and development of silicone pads, allowing for high quality, durable and economical printing
Pad Printing Evolution
Originally the entire process of pad printing was completed by hand. The images were manually engraved onto copper plates and a soft gelatin substance was then used to transfer the images using oil based inks. Later in the 20th century pad printers became automated utilizing hydraulics or pneumatic systems. The improvement if inks, solvents and the invention of a closed ink cup system has made the process far easier to use.
Today many industries use pad printing including:
- Electronics manufacturers
- Toy companies
- Aerospace Industries
- Specialty Advertising Agencies
